Maison et Objet Trend Report

Each autumn sees the return of the world’s biggest interior design trade show: Maison et Objet. Never ones to pass up an opportunity to discover the biggest interior trends, we donned our shopaholic hats, packed our tiniest carry-ons, and followed the best designers, trendsetters and exhibitors in the world to Paris. Read on for a summary of what we found, in our Maison et Objet Trend Report – and prepare for some serious interior design lust!

#1 Green & Gold

Green and gold is the ultra-luxe colour combination that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, and it was bottle green and brass in particular that dominated at Maison et Objet. Designers such as Dutchbone showcased deep green sofas and marble tables, highlighted with brass lighting, hammered vases, and geometric table legs. Inky blues and lush wall murals completed the modern glamour look. It’s bad news for copper fans; rose gold seems to have finally ended its reign as the designer’s metal of choice, in favour of its more yellowy counterparts.

#2 Velvet

Unexpected comeback-queen velvet stole the show in jewel-coloured chairs and sumptuous soft furnishings, exuding exquisite luxury wherever it went. Zuiver and HK Living were just two brands that revealed a selection of dining chairs, sofas and stools in this soft and shiny finish, leaving little doubt that velvet is the material of the moment.

#3 Art Deco

Velvet and rich colours go hand-in-hand with our next trend – Art Deco. Everywhere we looked, there were glamorous, Great Gatsby-style details, including ornate, curved chair backs and geometric patterns, as well as tons of black and monochrome. This is the trend for those who like to make a ‘wow’ statement with their interiors.

#4 Macramé

Macramé has been back on the interior design scene for a while, mostly in the form of plant hangers, but some brands are now drawing further inspiration from the 1970s, and incorporating fellow throwback tie-dye into their designs. Both Zuiver and Lorena Canals showcased cushions and wall decor that mixed macramé with pastel-coloured dyes, for a subtle ‘Ibiza meets Marrakesh’ effect.

#5 Parquet

Continuing the retro theme, parquet was seen to have crept its way off the floor and settled comfortably into dining and coffee tables, and even wall displays. The result was rustic-style furniture that perfectly complements the current ‘raw-natural’ and botanical trends.

#6 Botanical Prints

We couldn’t finish a Maison et Objet trend round-up without mentioning the giant leaf in the room. Plants were everywhere at the show – hanging from ceilings, in vertical gardens, printed on furnishings, stencilled on lighting – showing that the tidal-wave advance of greenery into our homes shows no sign of receding.

#7 Lobsters

And finally, hop aside flamingos; lobsters are the new brightly-coloured animal motif in town! In keeping with the metallic trend, Anne-Claire Petit even had a knitted gold version. We always knew Phoebe from Friends was a trendsetter.
