Mixing Patterns: Tips from Dash & Albert

Rooms with a mix of different rug patterns have an undeniable wow factor that comes from taking decorating risks. Mixing styles and patterns of rugs can be a little intimidating — after all, rugs are an investment, and what if the combo you thought was the perfect marriage is actually an unmitigated, first-date fail? Fear not, once you’ve got your room’s personality nailed down, follow these easy-peasy rules for effortless patterned rug pairing like a pro:

1.    Stick with the same colour scheme. It’s much easier to combine different rugs if the colours are harmonious. See how high-impact, black-and-white rugs pictured right, despite their different patterns, tie the hallway and stairs together?

2.    Focus on a single theme, like geometrics (pictured right), vintage, oriental or florals, and choose two patterned rugs that fit within the same theme. This is a great opportunity to inject some of your own personality!

3.    For a cohesive look choose rugs with a similar construction, i.e. woven, wool, cotton, PET etc.

4.    Make sure you choose rugs with a similar profile, just like people, rugs appear different in profile. A flat lightweight indoor/outdoor rug will look out of place next to a fluffy or wool  rug.
