Introducing the winning room set from this year’s Grand Designs Live: Where the Wild Things Are by Nisha Stevens, featuring Cuckooland’s Teepee Cabin bed! Cuckooland are over-the-moon to have been a part of Nisha’s unique creation. Painted in Farrow & Ball’s Charleston Grey, Nisha has transformed our Teepee Bed into a jungle camp, inspired by main character Max’s imaginative adventures. Here’s what Nisha had to say:

“I was instantly drawn to the theme of this year’s Grand Designs Live competition: ‘Famous Places That Never Existed’. It had such scope and I immediately thought of the book Where the Wild Things Are because of its adventurous spirit, imaginative story and iconic illustrations.

I wanted the room to look like it had been conjured from the depths of a child’s imagination and for things to not be quite as they seemed: helium balloons would on closer inspection turn out to be ceiling lights, boundaries would blur, a bed would become a camp for the night and also a ship sailing over a silent sea… The positioning of the furniture was also important – I know how children love to play and hide in small spaces, so I left a gap between the Teepee Cabin bed and the wall to allow for an impromptu child-sized den. The fun design of the bed itself also allows for a lot of clambering in and out!

The judges (Daniel Hopwood and Sophie Robinson from BBC2’s Great Interior Design Challenge) said that they liked the creativity in my room set and the fact that I’d kept the end user (i.e. children!) in mind throughout the design process. All in all I am delighted to have won, and would definitely do it again.”
